{blank} Siren Song Generator Chris Dodson, Jamestown, ND

Sea farin. folk be tellin' o' an isle, as ships pass th' sweetest shanty, lures men close and to their death on th' rocks below. Now I reckon that sirens or mermaids could make that sound, but it sings only when th' wind blows. And, seen in th' distance, by those lucky enough to survive th' wreck and live to be tellin' th' tale, a box sits high above it all, with strings across th' top opening.

Ye too can lure innocents to yer camp and indoctrinate them into th' lore o' kiting.

Similar to a classic window sill Aeolian harp, but with "wings" or "foils" to direct th' wind across th' strings. Otherwise, th' harp creates an eddy that disturbs th' flow o' air across th' strings.

Th' flow o' air be so efficient in this design that th' harp can sit on a table in high wind and never move.

Th' harp box consists o' foam board. Th' top be one piece, creased to make th' "wings" aft an incision was created on th' back side o' th' board.

More information on Aeolian harps and sound clips can be found at: www.wingsonstrings.org/aeolian/

Estimated Cost: $40.00 - $50.00, depending on costs of shipping and availability of strings.

{blank} PRACTICALLY PICASSO! Kathy Horn, Lindenwood, IL

A Traveller's Kite of Miniscule Proportions & Immense Impact

Compositions of discombobulated facial features may not be your idea of feel-good living-room art, but discombobulate them on a kite sail, and send it aloft - shivermetimbers- you have a visually arresting, dynamic, boffo PICASSO! Absolutely unlike any other kitemaking class you have ever taken, Practically Picasso is guaranteed to put a new "twist" in your bloody 3-cornered hat!

For starters, no drawing skills are required! None. Zip. Don't even THINK of drawing (unless, of course you are predisposed to that sort of thing)! And yet, each and every Picasso WILL be of it's maker's own composition and NO TWO WILL BE ALIKE! So how does that work? Read on(and please, you non-computer types, stay with me as I have plans for YOU as well!):

If you know how to turn the computer on, can point and click the mouse, then you possess all the tools and skills necessary to complete your Practically Picasso Masterpiece! You will not draw a thing; your MOUSE will do all of that work for you! You will be like a modern-day Walt Disney, directing your little "mouse" to select a Picasso-ish shape, enlarge it, or shrink it, fip it, spin it, color it, even obliterate it - whatever you dream will come true! And with some 50,000+ finished Picasso masterpieces in the "Gallery", you will have plenty to look at for inspiration! Point and click- do it in your jammies- with a glass of wine - standing on your head- whatever! Then print off your masterpiece and bring it with you to class. I will e-mail you with complete information once you are registered.

If you are one for whom walking the plank is a more pleasant alternative to that of sitting at a computer, hang onto your "floaties"! YOU can do the Practically Picasso without the aid of a computer and you STILL do not need to have drawing skills( or floaties)! I will provide you with "things" you can manipulate to achieve the same original composition as your geeky friends WITHOUT putting a strain on our overburdened power grids or fatigued mouse population. I will also have a "Gallery" available for you to view in class. Bloody fine, eh?

So, either way, you will compose a Practically Picasso miniature masterpiece, complete with flying line and tail. In addition, if you do not annoy the Captain, you will receive a fine "chest" for showing off and safe-keeping PLUS a little something "extra" to sling across your shoulders or attach to your breeches in a most swashbuckling seize-the-moment, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants, looky-what-I've- got piratey fashion! PRACTICALLY PICASSO - it's old school with new rules! BLIMEY!
