20TH ANNIVERSARY

MAKR is all about friends, food, fun, and kite making. A great way to start the season, see people you met last year, and meet some new flyers. No phones, no meals to cook, just time to indulge your mania and improve your skills.
From its humble beginnings in 1989, when 12 or so kite enthusiasts gathered together, in one room, to share their kitemaking interests and skills, the MIDWEST AREA KITEMAKERS. RETREAT (MAKR) has steadily grown to include over 75 participants from all across the Midwest and places beyond! Under the auspices of the Chicagoland SkyLiners Kite Club, and traditionally held on the second weekend of March, MAKR will celebrate its 18th successful year when kitemakers converge on Taft Campus the weekend of March 7, 8, & 9, 2008.
Lorado Taft Field Campus is the outdoor education facility of Northern Illinois University. Originally established as an artists. retreat over 100 years ago, it consists of 140 wooded acres, sitting high atop a bluff overlooking the scenic Rock River and the nearby community of Oregon, Illinois . some 110 miles west of Chicago. The dorms, dining hall, and classrooms are all within easy walking distance of one another, with classrooms open 24 hours. The campus has numerous hiking trails for those in need of quiet contemplation or by-the-seat-of-your-pants kiting adventure! And while it is not easy to find a flying field amongst the stately oaks, MAKR participants usually are so involved in learning and creating that they hardly notice!
